When my friend Rob emailed me to photograph his “spaz” and his “couch potato” I thought it was funny. Then, I met Ruby, a Brittany Spaniel — the most elusive dog I’ve photographed to date. You see, Rob and his wife, Julie, have a yard that is pure heaven to a bird dog. It’s a long lot, and the back half is full of trees and brush and has a path that leads back to a clearing complete with fire pit. (Okay, so the yard might be heaven for me too, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about.) As any natural hunting dog would, Ruby loves running through the brush looking for any creature she can sniff out.
When I arrived at their house, Rob let Ruby and Ohana (he’s the couch potato) out of the house and Ruby took off for the trees. Minutes would go by and I would have no idea where she was, then, out of no where I’d hear a rustling in the brush and see a blur of white and red fur fly through the clearing. She was gone. Again.
Luckily, I had Ohana, who was far more interested in the easy-to-get treats in my pocket, to keep me entertained. A Blue Heeler-Lab mix, Ohana, is a sweet boy who has been with Julie since she met him on a vacation in the Pacific Northwest some eightish years ago. He followed me, wherever I went, happy to do whatever was requested for another morsel, and, after a while, his crazy little sister slowed down a bit and we were able to get her in some portraits of her own.
