Okay, we’re going to need the way back machine for this post, ’cause waaay back in February I sent my girl Jen an email with subject reading “wanted: one small hyper dog”. In the email I explained that I had this crazy idea to start a pet photography business (I believe this was the first time I “said” that out loud to someone who was not family), I told Jen that Phaneuf had become increasingly annoyed with my camera and had all but said to my face, “Go find someone else to bug with that thing“, and I shared that while I was feeling pretty confident capturing images of the “big dog that lays around the house”, I was in dire need of practice with some “hyper little pooches”. Who better to contact than the infatuated owners of a nearly two year old Boston Terrier, right?
After a reschedule or two we were able to make things happen on a Saturday morning at the end of March. Knowing full well that Bogie stops for nothing (except his own exhaustion or the occasional treat) I pretty much approached the day with an “I’m just going to shoot and see what happens” kind of attitude. We took the little guy over to Jen’s mom’s house where he could be let loose in a larger yard, and he. went. nuts. I remember standing there with this little black and white blur, stick in tow, whizzing around the yard thinking to myself, ‘How do I make this work??’ It was definitely a different world.
I tried a few things with him; Jen tried a few others (thank God for first shoots with friends who don’t expect perfection, right?). Then we took him home and headed over to the small park across the street for a another round. I remember culling through the images afterward and being slightly disappointed that not every image made me swoon (high expectations much?), but in the end I was happy to come out of it with a good number of photos that I could pass on.
Here are a few of my faves from that day…
