peanut butter, worrywarts, and birthdays

There are two things about me that, without a doubt, came straight from my Grandma Alice. The first is the belief that world would not be right if Joseph L Rosenfield had not created Skippy peanut butter. The second is my tendency to be a worrywart, and last week Phaneuf decided to test the worrywart in me a bit.

On Monday, we got back from the cabin, and her skin was showing early signs of hot spots in multiple places. She slept constantly, which wasn’t an issue considering her level of activity over the weekend, but when she turned down her breakfast Wednesday morning…and, that is when the worrying went into full swing. After a visit to the vet (which included a negative Lymes disease test), some antibiotics, and nearly a week of nothing but rest, I’m happy to say she seems to be back to her old self.

Amongst all of the worrying and the sleeping of the week,we also had a birthday to celebrate. While it was clear Phaneuf was not feeling her best, she did humor me by pretending to enjoy the birthday Frosty-Paws I gave her. (Similar to how she pretended to love every morsel of treat Dr. Winter gave her after refusing to eat breakfast that morning.) Below is a little before-during-after of what turned out to be the liveliest part of her week.

Kristy - Aww, poor puppy! I’m glad she’s feeling better (or acting more normal, anyway).

the back of the closet | life in pics

Oh the things that live hidden in the back of one’s closet. I was recently challenged by a friend to clean out my closet…I mean really clean out my closet. Be done with all things that don’t fit or aren’t worn, and keep only two (TWO!) pieces for sentimental reasons. (Yikes!) My immediate response was along the lines of, “Sooooo, you’re going to make me decide how important my leather pants are to me.” (Yep, leather pants.) This of course spurred an extended conversation in which I swore they were cool when I bought them, and declared that there is no way they’d budge an inch over my knees these days. There was also a demand from the other side, to see photos of me in said leather pants here on the blog.

I’m elated to tell you sorry to say that I’ve looked through the pile of photo albums I own from my early twenties, and I do not have a single photo of myself in those pants. I promise. I would not lie to you about this.

So, the consolation prize is in fact a photo of the leather pants with a recent T-shirt I’ve purchased which proves that the wannabe rockstar in me hasn’t completely died. And maybe that’s why the leather pants continue to hang in the back of my closet.

two dog weekend | life in pictures

My parent’s Pudelpointer, Kasota, stayed with us over the weekend, and once again confirmed that we made the right decision when opting to get a large, lazy dog for our tiny home. Hunting dogs have a different energy (and agility) level, that a big ol’ Newfie just can’t compete with. Any energy reserves that Phaneuf had stored away with her all day napping sessions during the week were quickly depleted, but she still played like a champ until her friend went home Sunday night. Today, on the other hand, she has opted not to move unless absolutely necessary.

Below is a rare still moment of the two dogs together, quickly followed by yet another round of body slamming, backyard Wrestlemania.

life in pictures: frosted window panes | pounds per comments

Although it’s not my favorite Christmas song, it’s what I’ve been singing over and over this cold snowy morning, and it has me curious…What’s your favorite Christmas song??

Lucky_Mutt_Photography_121409_001

Don’t forget! A pound of dog or cat food will be donated to The Pet Project for every comment left on the blog between now and Thursday, December 17!

P.S. I have a long list of favorite holiday songs myself, and while I can’t pick just one, this one is definitely towards the top.

els - Awesome idea…glad to contribute my 2 pounds worth :) One of my new Christmas favorites is “I Believe” by Andrea Bocelli…love that man’s voice.

Jill - Since you mentioned it, I really do like the Christmas Waltz, but my favorite…hmm. You know I love Christmas songs. Ask we again and you’ll get another answer, but for this time, I’m going with O Holy Night.

Andra Smith - The Christmas Song – Nat King Cole… or Santa Baby – Eartha Kitt… I like the oldies… wonderful frost picture – great idea on the comments too! I hope you get many many more…

Laura - Peppermint Stick Parade – Bobby Vinton!

Chris - Not one song, but my favorite Christmas album is Chris Rice’s “The Living Room Session: Christmas”. It’s all piano, recorded in his living room (every now and then you can hear the squeaky floor as someone sneaks through the room) and it’s incredibly relaxing. Best album to set the tone for the season!

Anthony - I wrote a Christmas song. It’s called You Just Might See Santa. I use the song to help raise money for the American Heart Association. That’s why it’s my favorite. It’s relatively new but it reminds you of the traditional Christmas carols that were written decades ago.

One more pound for The Pet Project!

Stephen Tiano - The Eagles’ “Please ome Home for Christmas.”

KatG - My favorite Christmas song is Jingle Bell Rock because we have an animated Santa that dances to it. During the dramatic pause in the song the Santa stops moving and my parents dogs, who warily eyeball the Santa bot from the beginning of the song, go in for the sniff. The song always starts back up and Santa starts dancing just as they are going in and scares the bejesus out of them. Every. Time.

Candace - Christmas Canon by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, hands down. Absolutely love this song. My first christmas away from home I went to the Osborne Christmas lights at Disney, and the song, coupled with the lights and the many miles between me and my family just about brought me to tears. Beautiful song.

Stacey - Oh I’ve been so MIA I didn’t realize you were doing this, but what an EXCELLENT idea!!! Congrats to all the doggies who will benefit this holiday season. And I looove this photo too :-)

Deb - ooooh- my favorite song is “Zat you Santa Claus?” by Louis Armstrong.
