three dogs + one house built with love

I was thrilled to meet this gorgeous family at their equally gorgeous home on a sunny Saturday morning for some photos of their crew. As is the case with all of my clients, Jamie and Jeremy adore their pups. In fact, when going through the process of building their home, they even took time to consider the needs of the dogs when making many of their decisions. Killian, Darcy, and Brutus have definitely found their places in a loving home…and they have no qualms about soaking up every minute of it!

yappy hour…at a pirate bar!

Join me tomorrow at Smalley’s Caribbean BBQ for a Yappy Hour benefiting Friends of Stillwater Dog Park. A $10 ticket at the door will get you a free drink, appetizers, and door prize drawings. The event is dog friendly, so bring your pup and enjoy Minnesota’s beautiful patio season together! For more information on this event, please visit the Friends of Stillwater Dog Park’s event page.

And for your viewing pleasure, a completely unrelated, but gorgeous, photo of my new pal Killian from a recent session.

Please note: All pirate gear is completely optional at tomorrow’s event, but definitely photo opp worthy.:)

the spaz and the couch potato: ruby and ohana

When my friend Rob emailed me to photograph his “spaz” and his “couch potato” I thought it was funny.  Then, I met Ruby, a Brittany Spaniel — the most elusive dog I’ve photographed to date.  You see, Rob and his wife, Julie, have a yard that is pure heaven to a bird dog.  It’s a long lot, and the back half is full of trees and brush and has a path that leads back to a clearing complete with fire pit. (Okay, so the yard might be heaven for me too, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about.)  As any natural hunting dog would, Ruby loves running through the brush looking for any creature she can sniff out.

When I arrived at their house, Rob let Ruby and Ohana (he’s the couch potato) out of the house and Ruby took off for the trees.  Minutes would go by and I would have no idea where she was, then, out of no where I’d hear a rustling in the brush and see a blur of white and red fur fly through the clearing. She was gone. Again.

Luckily, I had Ohana, who was far more interested in the easy-to-get treats in my pocket, to keep me entertained.  A Blue Heeler-Lab mix, Ohana, is a sweet boy who has been with Julie since she met him on a vacation in the Pacific Northwest some eightish years ago.  He followed me, wherever I went, happy to do whatever was requested for another morsel, and, after a while, his crazy little sister slowed down a bit and we were able to get her in some portraits of her own.

a mixed duo: rocco and milo

Rocco and Milo are rescued pups that have made their home with my cousin, LeAnn, and her family.  I had met Rocco previously, but Milo was still a fairly new family member when their session took place.  When I got to their house, I set my bag o’ goodies on the living room chair, and within seconds Milo (who is, at best guess, a Chihuahua + Pug  + something else mix?) had burrowed his way into the bag sniffing out my treats! No matter what I did to distract him, that bag was all he wanted.  Eventually, I was able to get the bag out of his reach and from that moment on his sole interest changed to whatever smelly goodies were hiding in my pocket.

Rocco (whom they think is a  Jack Russel + Lab mix?), on the other hand, is Mom’s BFF.  A little unsure of my camera, he was never too far from his favorite girl.  Luckily the combination of treats + playtime with his [human] sister Lily + a favorite toy were enough to eventually persuade him to come out of his shell.

Oh how I love these doggie parts against that red stained deck!  I’ve since decided that, for the good of photography, all decks should be this color.:)
