I was searching through some photos from last summer over the weekend and stumbled across this one–it definitely made me stop and smile.

I hope your holiday weekend was a good one!

I hope your holiday weekend was a good one!
The last week has left me holding my own tongue regarding news of multiple loved ones in my life. I’m so excited for each of them, but, at least where the internets are concerned, I’m forced to hide it. (Yes, I can hear you groaning through the computer after reading that sly tribute to the Pointer Sisters.)
And while I’m being super cheesy, I thought I’d use that tie-in as an excuse to show off my favorite tongue ever…Phaneuf’s! Those of you who’ve had the pleasure of meeting Phaneuf are also probably familiar with the profuse apologies that Ryan and I often doll out for the behavior of her tongue. The phrase, “she’s a licker” is almost as common as the comment, “Wow! I thought that was a bear!” Her tongue, which is big, and often full of more slobber than the average dog-loving human is used to dealing with has it’s own separate brain…we’re sure of it. It greets people at the door, “thumps” like a leg when you hit just the right spot during a belly rub, and has been known to leap tall counters with a single bound (especially where anything buttered is concerned). All while the rest of Phaneuf looks at you with a glance that says, “I’m sorry, I can’t make it stop.”
It is in it’s quietest moments that it really gets me though. That little, itty-bitty bit of lolling tongue that sticks out when Phaneuf is at her most relaxed. It reminds me of her gentle soul, and never fails to bring back memories of the night we brought her home. Just a wee-little 23 lb black furball of a newfie pup with a tiny pink tongue passed out cold on the kitchen floor…a moment my heart will hold onto forever.

Fab. I love that tongue too.
Oh, my! That last shot is perfection!
She’s beautiful! Great photos! I wish I could meet her.
There are two things about me that, without a doubt, came straight from my Grandma Alice. The first is the belief that world would not be right if Joseph L Rosenfield had not created Skippy peanut butter. The second is my tendency to be a worrywart, and last week Phaneuf decided to test the worrywart in me a bit.
On Monday, we got back from the cabin, and her skin was showing early signs of hot spots in multiple places. She slept constantly, which wasn’t an issue considering her level of activity over the weekend, but when she turned down her breakfast Wednesday morning…and, that is when the worrying went into full swing. After a visit to the vet (which included a negative Lymes disease test), some antibiotics, and nearly a week of nothing but rest, I’m happy to say she seems to be back to her old self.
Amongst all of the worrying and the sleeping of the week,we also had a birthday to celebrate. While it was clear Phaneuf was not feeling her best, she did humor me by pretending to enjoy the birthday Frosty-Paws I gave her. (Similar to how she pretended to love every morsel of treat Dr. Winter gave her after refusing to eat breakfast that morning.) Below is a little before-during-after of what turned out to be the liveliest part of her week.

Aww, poor puppy! I’m glad she’s feeling better (or acting more normal, anyway).
I’ll be out of town through Monday, enjoying some quality, computer free, time with family–including my favorite wet dog.![]()
Have a lovely holiday weekend!

Phaneuf says nothing beats the heat like a good old fashioned run through the sprinkler! (Okay, maybe a dip in the lake would be better, but we make do with what we’ve got.)
I hope you’re all staying cool this week!
